Dorothy was born in the Shady Grove Community on June 26, 1934, the daughter of Clabe Abner and Lela Simmons Stripling. She spent her entire life in Nacogdoches County. Her childhood was spent with her siblings, as their parents taught them to be honest, hard-working and respectable people. She and Robert Alford Smith were married for 55 years, until his passing. Together, they raised their children and ran Sacul Wood Company for many years. When the kids were young, they loved spending time in Galveston every year at the beach, which was her favorite get-away place. She also loved each holiday with large family gatherings and her famous chicken and dressing. Dorothy spent many happy hours at the Nacogdoches Treatment Center enjoying the company of her friends. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She faced each day with a bright smile and a great attitude. She was fun-loving, wise and generous. She was a blessing and a joy to all who had the privilege to know her. She often said "I take each day and make it a good one" and "I just do what God tells me to". She lived each day of her life with grace, dignity and a generous dose of fun. Her children call themselves blessed to have been given the opportunity to call her Mama.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Allen Smith and wife, Sheila, Cathy Smith-Carmichael and husband, John, Barry Smith and wife, Mary, Missy Smith-Cortes and husband, Tavo, and Gabe Smith; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild; and daughters-in-law, Joann Smith and Cindy Smith.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Alford Smith; sons, Alford Smith and Jeff Smith and brothers, Charlie Stripling, Martin Stripling, Ford Stripling and Roy Stripling.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jeffrey Cortes, Aaron Cortes, Kyle Smith, Brad Smith, Vance Smith and Tavo Cortes
