Vernon Stinson Obituary

Funeral service for Vernon Glenn Stinson, 94, of Nacogdoches, will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Laird Funeral Home with Pastor Ryan McCollum officiating. Interment will follow at Eden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Laird Funeral Home.

Vernon was born and raised in Douglass, Texas.  As he grew up, he knew he had to work to achieve his goals and dreams.  He did just that.  Vernon opened the first tire, mechanic and repair shop.  He also had a machine shop located in Douglass where the Douglass Cafe is currently, and during this time, he had several patents on the things he made in the shop.  Over the years, he ventured into other business operations including timber hauling and rock hauling when he worked for Longview Asphalt Railcar Company.  He also owned the old 59 South motel for many years with a fabric shop inside.  Later in life, he had the big RV Park off 59 for 10-12 years.  He then opened the RV park off Hwy 21 West and has been there for the past 15 years.  Vernon could do most anything.  He invented tools to make his jobs easier, he loved to sell and trade items, he loved taking things apart and putting them back together just to see how they worked, and he was truly a master at anything.  Vernon was the definition of a self-made man.  Through the years, he became a proud owner of multiple properties and still owned some in the Nacogdoches area.  Vernon was a true workaholic.  His hands were never idle and he had many accomplishments from the dedication he had to doing what he enjoyed.

Vernon honorably served in the US Army and was stationed in Japan during WWII.  His devotion and love of country was admirable.  He loved his friends and co-workers, but his family was the most important thing to him.  He will be remembered for the hard-working man he was and for his quick wit and love that he bestowed on those he was lucky to call friends and family.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Affinity Hospice for the dedicated care and compassion shown during their time of need. Also, a special thanks to Shane Wells for always being ready and willing to help with any task Vernon needed.

Vernon is survived by his son, Earlon Stinson, of Graniteville, SC; grandsons, Richard, Jackie, Darick, Kaleb, and Trevor; sister, Louise McDuffie, of Nacogdoches; and his caregiver of 22 years, Liz Smith.

He is preceded in death by his father, Will Stinson; mother, Maggie Rogers Stinson; brother, Joe Stinson; wives, Alpha Mae Rector and JoAnna Pursser; and sons, Odis (Pee-Wee), Vernon Lynn (Red), and Rickey Glenn.

Pallbearers for the service will be Richard Stinson, Jackie Stinson, Darick Stinson, Kaleb Stinson, Trevor Stinson, and Justin Stinson. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Don Fults, Don Wilson, Arthur Herron, Otis Yates, Randy Bass, Shane Wells, Keith Drewery, and brothers.
