Rev. Benjamin "Ned" Chipley, a devoted minister, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, went to be with his Lord peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on April 24, 1935, in Singleton, Mississippi, and raised in Carthage, Mississippi, Rev. Chipley dedicated his life to faith, family, and community.
He moved to Texas to attend Westminster College and Bible Institute in Tehuacana, where he met the love of his life, Martha. Together, they built a marriage that spanned nearly 64 years, rooted in faith, love, and shared purpose.
Throughout his remarkable ministry of over 60 years, Rev. Chipley pastored six different churches, bringing hope, wisdom, and spiritual guidance to countless congregants across Texas. He touched lives through his words, actions, and unshakable faith. While living in Dallas, he raised three wonderful children—Debra "Debi" Chipley McDowell (married to Danny McDowell and the eldest), Benjamin Chipley (married to Freida Chipley), and Brent Chipley (married to Kim Chipley). Brent, in particular, held a special place in Ned’s heart, reflecting their unique bond, while Benjamin was his beloved wife Martha’s favorite. His love for his family, his congregation, and his faith defined every chapter of his extraordinary journey.
Upon retiring, he and Martha moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, where they found solace and joy in a welcoming community. He remained committed to his faith, serving as a proud member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, where he combined his love for ministry with his passion for riding, embracing fellowship and service in new and meaningful ways.
Rev. Chipley was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Ed and Lilla Ivey Chipley. He was the seventh of ten children, growing up alongside his four brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his devoted brother, Tommy Cook Chipley, and his loving sisters, Peggy Sue Catching and Elizabeth Paine. He is also survived by ten adoring grandchildren: Sondra Hammond (married to Daniel Hammond), John McDowell (married to Deanna McDowell), Amy Florez (married to Kirk Florez), Joel Chipley (married to Angela Chipley), Jordan Gallegos (married to Jesse Gallegos), Joshua Chipley, Jill Chipley (hesitant boyfriend of 8 years, Miles Hass), John Paul Chipley, Jaclyn Chipley, and Joseph Chipley. His great-grandchildren—Madeline, Megan, Leonel, Micah, Nathan, Eleanor, Aaron, and Everett—continue his legacy of love and joy.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Laird's Funeral Home in Nacogdoches (2116 South St, Nacogdoches, TX, 75964). A celebration of his extraordinary life will take place on Saturday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m. at Laird’s Funeral Home in Nacogdoches. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Christian Motorcyclists Association, an organization close to Rev. Chipley’s heart.
Though his earthly journey has ended, Rev. Chipley’s impact as a devoted servant of faith and family will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
