Mattie Lee Pitts Sweetser entered into a long-awaited glorious presence of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 in Nacogdoches, surrounded by her family. She had attained the age of 98 years and 10 months.
She was the third child of Barney H. Pitts and Virgie Lee Collins Pitts. She met the love of her life and lifelong companion while attending Harmony School. She and Perry Sweetser were married on April 24, 1944 and celebrated over 64 years together. During these years, they enjoyed many trips in their motorhome and on cruises. She especially enjoyed the mountains. Other activities she loved were fishing and being an excellent homemaker. Her home was always spotless and home cooked meals were always on the table. Some of her specialties were chicken & dressing, chicken & dumplings, hot water cornbread and salmon patties and of course, she constantly had her family and friends over to enjoy them.
Other activities were helping her husband take care of their cattle, gardening, canning, quilting, working in her flower beds and mowing her yard.
Mattie spent many days helping others and was known for giving her mom, mother-in-law, daughter, aunts and friends home perms and on occasion would cut their hair but never charged any of them.
She was a member of Lake Nacogdoches Volunteer Fire Department and head cook for the barbecue fundraisers for many years. She was also a member of Alazan Congregational Methodist Church where she enjoyed many years teaching children in Sunday School. She was a woman of great faith.
Mattie is survived by her daughter, Shirley Maxine Johnson; grandson, Lowell Mac Johnson and wife, Trecia; great grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Morgan Johnson Lima and Andrew Johnson. Each of them brought great joy to her life.
She if preceded in death by her parents; husband, Perry Sweetser; son-in-law, Arthur Mac Johnson; brothers, J.T. Pitts, Ervin Pitts and Harvey Pitts and sister, Madaliene Pitts Crawford and husband, Homer.
Special heartfelt thanks go to Westward Trails staff and Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassion and loving care of Mrs. Sweetser.
Serving as pallbearers are Andrew Johnson, Matthew Johnson, David Beall, Joe Ed Eddings, Floyd Turnage and Brad Petty. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Eddings and Moises Servin.
