Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from 5-7pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Mrs. Matlock passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 in Carthage, Texas.  She was born on January 2, 1937 in Houston, Texas.

Mary Anne was born in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Jesse and Katheryn English Bruner.  Her childhood consisted of many travels with her parents and siblings.  Her younger days in Arkansas led to her love of being in the Ozark Mountains.  Even into adulthood, this remained her favorite place to visit and she did so often with her husband and sister but especially enjoyed her visits during the time of the beautiful colors changing in the fall.

In August of 1955, she and her beloved Thomas Matlock were married.  He was truly her other half.  Their family of 4 spent some time between Mt. Enterprise and Houston but finally settled in Mt. Enterprise where they remained.  They were happy on their farm with the garden and farm animals and of course, their boys.  Mary Anne worked as a clinical nurse for Dr. Mann in Henderson for many years and then at the bank in Mt. Enterprise.  Her later life found her enjoying the simplicity of country living.  She continued to raise a garden and canning her harvest was certainly a talent she held.  She was a country lady at heart and taught her boys and daughters-in-law how to be self sufficient and provide food for their families.  Mary Anne was a wonderful cook and spent holidays surrounded by her beloved family as they enjoyed her famous “Coke cake” or some of her “forgotten cookies”, along with the table full of dishes that everyone loved.  The times they spent together were special and the entire family knew how much she loved them.  The grandchildren called her “Ma” and that simple little word brought so much joy to her life. Mary Anne will forever be remembered as an honest, loving, generous lady who spoke her mind without regrets.  The life lessons she taught her children and grandchildren are ones they will never forget.

Mary Anne is survived by her sons, Mike Matlock of Mt. Enterprise and Ricky Matlock & wife, Doris of Carthage; grandchildren, Christina Garcia of Gladewater, Jessica Woodall of Florida, Adrienne Matlock of Liberty City, Michael Matlock II of Nacogdoches, Travis Matlock & wife, Madeline of Tatum, Katheryn Jordan & husband, Kalan of Nacogdoches, and Jennifer Beesler & husband, Anthony of Mt. Enterprise; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sister, Norma Wampler of Montgomery; brother-in-law, Gary Matlock of Mt. Enterprise and sisters-in-law, Charlcye Matlock of Mt. Enterprise and Rita Hughes & husband Richard of Center.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse & Katheryn Bruner; husband, Thomas Matlock;  great grandson, Korbyn Matlock and brothers, Kendrick Bruner & wife, Wilma, Homer Bruner and Charlie Bruner.
