Our sweet mother, Marjorie Kathleen Pitts Meehan, passed away peacefully early this morning on November 25, 2023, at the age of 98. She was the daughter of Jasper and Dollie Pitts, born in Port Arthur, Texas on November 1, 1925. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, where she was a member of the Red Hussars Drum and Bugle corps. She attended college at Our Lady of the Lake, Texas Woman's University, and graduated from St. Louis Conservatory of Music. She met her future husband Harold Meehan at the Conservatory, and they were married before returning to Texas. She was one of the original teachers at the new Fehl Elementary school, where she taught music in Beaumont, Texas. She encouraged her students to participate in all the music presentations and the Christmas program was always a hit. After 24 years of teaching, she changed professions and worked for the State Health Department for 10 years.
She was a wonderful cook, always baking pies and cakes, and famous for her meatloaf, pinto beans, and cornbread. She had a welcoming home which included her children’s friends, and any stray cat or dog that needed a home. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Nacogdoches, serving as a Deaconess and playing piano at the early service. She loved her Sunday School class and they had lots of fun together.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Bernice Montour and Ruth Pitts, and niece Mary Beth Bradburn. She is survived by her four children, Bill Meehan of Belton, Sherry Bales (Pat) of San Angelo, Tim Meehan (Linda) of Lumberton, and Mike Meehan (Ann) of Cedar Park. She was affectionately known as Mambo by her surviving 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by favorite nieces and cousins.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of Calderwoods, especially Jackie and Terry, Buckner Villas, and Cedar Park’s New Hope Manor. Your care of Mom these past ten and a half years was truly a blessing to our family.
