Mable Durant Obituary

Funeral services for Mable Horn Durant, 97, of Nacogdoches will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Laird Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rock Springs Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Laird Funeral Home. Mrs. Durant passed away on July 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 7, 1927, in Buffalo, Texas to the late Oliver J. and Callie White Horn.

Born and raised in Buffalo, Mable grew up in a rural home without electricity. Though times were hard for her family, she pitched in working in cotton fields to help where she could. Mable graduated from Buffalo High School in 1944 and soon married the love of her life, James Lawrence Durant, who was just back from serving in WWII. It is said that he was the first soldier in Buffalo to marry after the war ended. The couple raised their family to be strong in life and faith. Mable and James were married for 62 years at the time of his passing in 2006. Mable waited until her children were adults before going to work at the age of 42. She started as a file clerk with Memorial Hospital and worked her way up to Medical Records Director. Even though she retired to keep from learning the new computer system, Mable embraced technology often hooking up her own electronics and could work a cell phone like a teenager. Mable was a bit of a perfectionist; she liked things her way. She was an excellent gardener and cook. Mable had a talent for sewing and made beautiful clothing. The greatest achievement in her life was her family. She doted on all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a true matriarch and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Mable is survived by her daughters, Betty Durant Sieffert and husband, Bruce, and Jean Durant Bryant; sister, Joann Rudlinger and husband, Don; brother, Richard Reagan Horn and wife, Linda; grandchildren, Bryan Joseph Sieffert and Joel Quade, James Darrell Sieffert, Stephen Jason Sieffert and wife, Nonya, Jenny Elizabeth Young and husband, Jeff, Denise Kaye Bryant-Hall and wife, Deanna, and Cheryl Cleveland and husband, Dwight; great-grandchildren, Jason, Stephen and fiancé, Heather, Conner, Natalie, Brad-Michael and fiancé, Danielle, Callie, Kade, Madison, Jaclynn, Jeffrey, Maggie, Hunter, and Dalton; along with numerous nieces and nephews that were very dear to her.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Lawrence Durant; parents, Oliver and Callie Horn; son, James Oliver Durant; grandson, Michael Durant; sister, Florene Waters; and brothers, Winifred Horn and Robert Horn.
