Lutherine "Boots" Sowell Obituary

Funeral services for Lutherine Jones Sowell, 93, of Nacogdoches, will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Laird Funeral Home officiated by Dr. Kendall McDonald. Interment will follow at Lower Chireno Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Laird Funeral Home. Mrs. Sowell passed away February 7, 2026, in Nacogdoches. She was born on July 17, 1932, in San Augustine to the late Leroy and Clarice Jones.

Lutherine was born and raised in San Augustine County. She graduated from San Augustine High School and married Jack Sowell soon after. Together they had 2 children, Clarice and Roger. Sadly, Jack passed away in 1976. On November 12, 1977, Lutherine married Lenard Sowell, one of Jack’s brothers, and the two of them blended their families into one. Lenard had 3 children from his first marriage, Riki, Joe, and Lee Lenette. Forming a “Brady Bunch” of sorts, Lutherine and Lenard’s love for each other bloomed and they made a beautiful family together.

Throughout her life, Lutherine worked for Noble & Co. in Chireno and then later when the company moved to San Augustine, she joined them there as well. After that she worked in accounts payable for Holly Farms in San Augustine, which later became Tyson and was relocated to Center.

Lutherine was a talented person. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking for her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Lutherine, or Boots as she was lovingly referred to, was known to be quiet but extremely fun. She was a godly woman and the epitome of Proverbs 31. Lutherine was a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church for 35 years. She had taught Sunday school for over 40 years. Lenard was a member of the Gideons, and she helped him in that ministry as well. Lutherine was a loving, compassionate, God-fearing wife, mother, and grandmother. Her presence will be greatly missed in this world until we see her again on the other side.

Lutherine is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Lenard Sowell; daughter, Clarice Mooney and husband, Tommy; son, Roger Sowell and wife, Doris; Lenard’s children, Riki Sowell and wife, Teri, Joe Sowell and wife, Julie, and Lenette Spivey and husband, Randy; grandchildren, Heather Hagle and husband, Brandon, Tiffany Crouch and husband, Sean, Russell Sowell and wife, Krystal, Amy Sowell, Erik Sowell and wife, Caroline, Matthew Sowell and wife, Cherese, Allison Luedecke and husband, Shaun, and Kendra Cook and husband, Aaron; 16 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ilene Smith.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Sowell; her parents, Leroy and Clarice Jones; brothers, Robert Lewis Jones, Albert Marlon Jones, and Carlton Ray Gore; and sisters, Lynda Wagstaff and Shirley Hightower.

Serving as pallbearers will be Lenard’s Breakfast Bible Study group whom Lutherine served breakfast to for over 20 years; Bob Hurst, Bill Stanaland, George Middlebrook IV, Thomas Kerse, Mike Claude, and Terry Masten.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to The Arbor Assisted Living and Heart to Heart hospice staff for not only caring for Lutherine but also caring about her.
