Louis Crimn Kirkland Obituary

Graveside services for Louis Crimn Kirkland, 93, of Nacogdoches will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Park with Bro. Paul Sevar of Calvary Baptist Church officiating.

Louis Crimn Kirkland passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Louis was born on April 23, 1928, in San Augustine, specifically the White Rock Community, to his loving parents L.C. and Mattie Kirkland.

Louis would grow up to join the Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany. After being honorably discharged from the Army he then drove a truck for Red Ball Motor Freight. During this time, he met the love of his life, Joyce Harlan. Louis and Joyce met while he was picking up freight from The Candy House where she worked. They were soon married on September 4, 1953, in Nacogdoches, and celebrated 68 wonderful years of marriage together.

Louis had many accomplishments in those 68 years, but his children and grandchildren were his greatest. He always supported them in sporting events, school, and social activities. He taught them that if they wanted something they had to work for it. His children also remember him as only having to tell them once to do something, there was no warning. Although he was a stern father figure, he was also remembered for always picking on someone about something. One example was the night he and his good friend Ralph went to his nephew Pat’s house and moved the TV cable outside. Pat’s wife, Becky, was hollering for Pat to do something and Pat refused to go outside, all the while Louis and Ralph were having a good laugh!

Other things Louis will be remembered for is his love of raising cows, gardening, deer hunting, vacations, watching the Houston Astros and his church involvement. Louis always had dogs and at least one horse or donkey, along with his cows. Anything that Louis harvested from his garden he would share with friends and family. When he went deer hunting with his son, he would tie him to the tree that way if, and possibly when, he fell asleep he would not fall out. Louis was a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and even served as Chairman of the Deacons. He also volunteered in the other committees at church when needed. He was a proud member of the VFW as well. Louis was an avid traveler; he has visited Colorado, North Carolina, Florida, the Grand Old Opry, and he always made sure to visit where Joyce’s twin sister was living.

Louis is survived by his wife Joyce; children, Marilyn King and husband Pat and Rickey Kirkland and wife Tanni; grandchildren, Chase Phillips, and girlfriend Jcie, Kyle Phillips and girlfriend Sage, Whitney Younts and husband Charlie and Haley Rector and husband Travis; great grandchildren, Ryan Rector, Matheson Phillips, Kason Little and Kylie Little.

He is preceded by his parents, L.C., and Mattie Kirkland; and half-sister Tassie Hardy.
