Laura Blankenship Obituary

Graveside services for A. Laura Layton Blankenship, 94, of Nacogdoches, will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with Jay Taylor officiating.

Mrs. Laura Blankenship passed away on Sunday March 21, 2021 in Nacogdoches. She was born on January 10, 1927 in Chireno, Texas.

Laura was born on January 10, 1927 in Chireno, Texas to Guy Layton, Sr. and Alma Palmer Layton.  She was the fifth of twelve children.  She became a Christian at the age of 18.  On November 6, 1943, she married J.D. Blankenship. Laura attended Nacogdoches Business College and upon completion she began working as the secretary for the Nacogdoches City Manager where she remained until her retirement after serving for 32 years.  Laura loved The Lord and was a dedicated and long-time member of Stallings Drive Church of Christ.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  If there was a baby in the house, you would hear the creak of the rocking chair as she did what she loved the best…rocking that “bitsy baby”.  Laura was kind, loving and dedicated to her family.  She taught many lessons during her 94 years, including how to love each other and be respectful.  Her life was filled with family and friends but most importantly it was filled with unfaltering love.  If you were her family, she loved you without boundaries.  She always took the time to listen to stories and even added a few of her own memories and experiences along the way.  Her family was more important to her than anything, taking a second only to the love she had for her Savior.  She will forever be remembered as the rock of the family and the one who loved them, even when the leaves were falling from the trees.

She is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Blankenship; her parents; a son, Jim D. Blankenship; grandson, Kyle Blankenship; great-grandson, Mason Shelton; four sisters, Alma Stewart, Lillian Ivy, Laverne Sanders and Dorothy Hardy; and two brothers, Elvin Lamar "Son" Layton and Guy Vernon "G.V." Layton, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Don Blankenship and wife, Gail of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Casey Blankenship, Jon Blankenship, Jess Blankenship, Jamie Shelton and husband, Atticus and Janet Perkins and husband, Clayton; great grandchildren, Macy Smith and husband, Cory; Caleb Blankenship and wife, Amanda, Call Blankenship, Jake Blankenship, Josh Blankenship, Morgan Blankenship, Collin Shelton, Seely Shelton, Jeremy Shelton, Jason Briley, Kalli Perkins, Mason Reeves and Olivia Blankenship; and 3 great-great grandchildren, Layla Blankenship, Laura Blankenship and Oaklee Briley.
