John McGarity Obituary

In Loving Memory of John Charles McGarity

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Charles McGarity, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away in his home on March 3, 2024, at the age of 74.

Born on December 10, 1949, John was preceded in death by his parents James and Laverne Beck and his sister Nancy Sue McGarity. He was known by many names, each reflective of the different roles he played in the lives of those who loved him—John, Husband, Dad, Grumps, Uncle John, Papa John, Boss, Friend, Mentor, and undoubtedly so many more.

John is survived by his wife, Terri Nelson McGarity, and his children Jennifer McGarity Wood (spouse Deron Wood), Sean McGarity (spouse Jennifer Pappas McGarity), Sharon McGarity Davis (spouse Joshua Davis), stepson Rawley Miller (spouse Jamie Miller), stepson Graham Miller (spouse Maranda Miller) and Sister-in-law Karen Nelson Flores (spouse Andy Flores). He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Sabrina Wood, Sean Miller, Candace Davis, Justin McGarity, Lexie Davis, Cooper McGarity, and Kenleigh Miller.

John served in the Navy on a diesel submarine, earning the esteemed Dolphin pin—a submariner's right of passage and a badge of honor. His commitment to service extended beyond his military service into various facets of his community. John made significant contributions throughout his life such as involvement with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he provided ground and building maintenance and served as a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, he lent his time and efforts to organizations such as The Lions Club, Adult Softball Leagues, Boy Scouts, Booster clubs, and the Red Cross.

John's professional journey began in the hotel business before branching out into ventures such as convenient stores, laundromats, car washes, and real estate investments, establishing himself as successful entrepreneur.

John's zest for life was contagious. Despite his tough exterior, his heart was immense, always desiring the best for those around him. Whether making connections in a grocery store line, telling stories that made everyone laugh for hours, or stopping in his tracks to lend a hand when asked, John was a friend to all who met him. He loved traveling to places with cool weather during Texas summers and was always ready for an adventure. Even as an adult, John remained a kid at heart from jumping off the cliffs at Inks Lake, riding roller coasters, fishing offshore or bass fishing in a raging storm, he definitely lived life with a sense of adventure and joy.

May the memories of John’s kindness, and zest for life continue to inspire all who were touched by his remarkable presence.
