Mr. Johnson passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021 in Chireno.

Greg was born on October 10, 1958 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the son of Jimmie and Joanna Havard Johnson.  Greg was definitely a country boy and his mom and dad made sure Greg learned to work the land and survive with what you had.  His dad had a dream of farm living so he moved them to a small community in East Texas.  Chireno became the place they called home.  Greg grew up working with his dad in their family-owned sawmill and logging the woods in the area.  Eventually, as Greg became older, he went to work for The City of Nacogdoches Street Department and eventually as an officer for the police department where he gained the rank of Lieutenant.    After working for the city for 17 years, Greg found solace in the simple life on his home place.  He had lots of time to spend with his children and grandchildren and never missed a moment to stop at the dollar store and grab “a little something” to drop off at their house; sometimes it was pizza or candy but it didn’t matter…they loved it!   Greg enjoyed many wonderful times in his life with his closest friends and family.  He loved being a part of the Do Dat BBQ every year because cooking was one of his greatest joys.  He was a jokester in all senses of the word and his very distinctive laugh lit up the crowd when he was around.  To know Greg was to be entertained, to say the least.  He was happiest when surrounded by the people he cared about the most even if it simply meant sitting on the porch telling stories of days gone by.  Greg loved fishing and riding the property on the ranger but the grandkids being spoiled was always his favorite thing to do.  His love of reading and anything to do with “true crime” was a passion for him as well.  Among his greatest achievements, he considered his Masonic membership a very honorable one.  He served as Past Master of the Swift Masonic Lodge #678 and was a member of Milam Lodge #2 A.F. & A.M.   Greg will be missed by many people and remembered by even more.  His weekly trips to the Chireno café to eat with the grandkids will be a treasured time for them and the simple things he did for others will forever be etched in the minds of those who knew him the best.

Greg is survived by his children, Kathryn Johnson of Chireno and Seth Johnson and wife, Jacki of Chireno; grandchildren, Payton Johnson and James Johnson; brothers, Larry Johnson of Chireno and Jimmie Johnson and wife, Teresa of San Augustine.  He is also survived by Lauren Brittain of Cleveland, Texas who was a daughter in his heart and lifelong friends, David Perkins and Boyd Gartman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Joanna Johnson.
