Graveside service for Geneva Gulley, 90, of Nacogdoches, will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 12, 2021, at Blackjack Cemetery.
Geneva was born and raised in the Black Jack Community of Nacogdoches County. She was taught ways of life that was a part of who she was as well as what she taught her children. She lived a simple life and worked hard for everything she had. She loved life and enjoyed each moment that was given to her. Geneva had a green thumb and spent long hours growing her beloved plants and flowers. It has been said that she could take a stick and grow it into a flower! She was surrounded by the fruits of her labor and shared with as many as she could. Geneva’s porch on Durst Street, where she called home for over 35 years, always had beautiful plants and flowers for everyone to see. Her most joyful times were spent with her family and she grinned with happiness when she was able to share stories from her childhood. She would reminisce about the times of dancing and having homemade ice cream made in an old wooden, hand cranked machine. Later in her life, Geneva also enjoyed playing bingo and going to garage sales looking for great treasures.
Geneva is survived by her children, Billy Bates and wife, Lillian of Nacogdoches, Beverly Rector of Austin and Vicky Hamilton and husband, Gary of Woodville; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren; sister, Carolyn Anthony of Black Jack; and sister-in-law, Joyce Martin of New Caney.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Luther and Lois Lucille Pleasant Martin; children, Roland Bates, Betty Fountain and Pam Smith; and brother, Donald Martin.
