Dorothy Penney Obituary

Dorothy Christina Comiskey Penney, 96

Dorothy Penney of Cushing, Texas passed away on May 7, 2021. She was born in 1924 in Ennis, Texas to Patrick and Christina Comiskey. She was the oldest of 10 children.

She graduated Ennis High School in 1941 and attended Draughon’s business college in Dallas, Texas. Her Daddy helped her get a job as dispatcher at Southern Pacific railroad in Hearne, Texas. She would ride the train home to Ennis to visit her family on weekends.

When WWII ended, she was “bumped” from the job in Hearne and transferred to a timekeeper job in the payroll office for Southern Pacific in Houston, Texas.  It was there she met her husband, Joe Penney.  They were married December 27, 1952 and honeymooned in Daytona, Florida.

They started their family in Houston, Texas before moving Dallas and settling in Huntsville, Texas.  She worked as a surveyor for the US Census Bureau for many years.  Later in life, she was employed by King’s Candy store on the square in Huntsville, Texas.  Upon retirement, Joe and Dorothy moved to their farm in Rusk County.  Dorothy became an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a charter member of the 3rd Age group.  She loved volunteering at the annual Sacred Heart Multicultural Fest.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Joe Penney and her eldest son William Lewis Penney.  She is survived by her children, Kay Penney, Charles Penney, Dorothy Jo and Donnie Tucker, Cecilia Penney, and Alice and Bill Bard. She has numerous grand-children and great-grandchildren, as well as her many loving relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.

Dorothy requested that attendees to her funeral service wear bright, cheerful attire to celebrate her love of flowers. Visitation will be Thursday May 13th from 4 – 6 pm at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, Texas with memorial rosary in her memory at 6pm.  The Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 14 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches at 10:00 am. Followed by the graveside service at Lyles Sanders Cemetery, CR 3206. Luncheon following the burial served at Mt Enterprise Community Center, 300 NW 2nd Street, Mt Enterprise, Texas.   Remembrances may be made in the form desired by friends.
