“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” —John 14:27

Donald “Don” Wayne Barlow, Sr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Tyler, Texas.

Don was born on July 14, 1944, in Nacogdoches, Texas. After attending Nacogdoches ISD, he made the courageous decision to enlist in the United States Navy, where he had the opportunity to travel the world. Upon returning home, he began a lifelong career in law enforcement with the Nacogdoches Police Department, serving from 1967 to 1984. During that time, he was honored to attend the 94th Session of the FBI Academy in 1973—an accomplishment he took great pride in.

In 1986, Don moved to Austin, Texas, where he launched his own private investigation firm. Later, he returned to Nacogdoches to continue his public service with the Nacogdoches County Drug Task Force.

After retirement, Don found joy in the simple rhythms of daily life. He could often be found at Pineywoods Country Club with his noon golf group or enjoying lunch with friends at Brookshire Brothers. Known for his generosity, sharp wit, and warm heart, Don never hesitated to lend a hand or offer support to anyone in need. His kindness was felt deeply by many, and his presence was a constant source of comfort in the community.

Don was especially proud of his family—his greatest joy in life. He spoke often of their accomplishments and took every opportunity to support and encourage them.

He is survived by his children: Donald “Donnie” Wayne Barlow, Jr. and wife Jerri of Nacogdoches; Kristi Spencer and husband Rodney of Nacogdoches; and Macy Reeves and husband Cullen of New Orleans. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Courtney Hardy and husband Colton, Clayton Barlow, Cody Barlow and wife Kayla, and Parker Reeves; and his great-grandchildren: MaKenna, Jensyn, Ares, Zepplyn, Amelia, and Axton. He leaves behind his sister, Patricia “Pat” Stewart and husband Randy; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Michelle McGee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Turner Barlow and Lois (Aiken) Barlow Drake; his stepfather, Dr. Willard Drake; his brother, Doyle Barlow; and his great-nephew, Austin Stewart.

Don’s love for animals was another of his many endearing traits. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Nacogdoches Humane Society.
