Jesus told His disciples, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to Myself, so that where I am, there you may be also,” (John 14:3) and on June 6, 2021 in Nacogdoches, Danny Joe Powell went to his Father’s house. Born October 27, 1940, in Houston, Texas, to George D and Kathryn Powell, he was the youngest of seven children.

Danny met the “builder of all things” (Hebrews 3:4) when he was saved in a revival at Queens Road Baptist Church on January 26, 1960.  Danny fell in love with the Lord and his faith never wavered.  After a courtship of daily calls during the lunch hour and visits every evening, Danny and Carolyn Akridge were married on November 25, 1960, by Danny’s father who was a lay preacher.

Following a visit in the late autumn of 1969, Danny and Carolyn fell in love with the East Texas terrain and fall foliage of Nacogdoches and made it their permanent home. Danny started a construction company and worked building houses and commercial properties in the community for 47 years. Danny based all his decisions in both his personal and professional life on Biblical principles and was known among his subcontractors and employees as a man of integrity who was fair, and generous.

After going on mission trips to Brazil and Mexico, Danny developed a love for the Hispanic community and taught Sunday School at Iglesia Bautista Cristiana. He later saw the need for prison ministry and began corresponding with many incarcerated men who had come to faith in Jesus Christ. At one time, Danny was writing and sending Bible studies to as many as 15 men whom he had befriended. He faithfully wrote to one man for 13 years who was recently released. Danny knew the words of the song Great is Thy Faithfulness to be true in his own life and worked to share the hope of Christ with others. “Great is Thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see, All I have needed Thy hand hath provided, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.”

Danny and Carolyn enjoyed 60 years of marriage.  Rising early for his construction work, he set aside time in the morning daily to read his Bible and pray. He was a gentleman in everything sense of the word.  He will be remembered by his family for his love for them, his patience and his gentleness. In retirement, the couple valued their added time with the Lord, walks together and the joy of gardening.

As Danny has gone to his eternal home, his family trusts in the following assurance, “Not one of the good promises which the Lord has made to the House of Israel failed; all came to pass” (Joshua 21:45). He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their sons, Michael Powell and wife, Ami, and Kerry Powell and wife, Kim, 7 grandchildren: Jocelyn Holmes, Jonathan Powell, Joel Powell, Josiah Powell, Ethan Powell, Klint Powell, and Kennedy Powell, 5 great grandchildren, and 4 nephews and 4 nieces. Danny was preceded in death by his parents, George and Kathryn Powell, his brothers, Sterling, Gerald, Herschel and Wayne Powell, and his sisters, Joyce Powell Cox and Shirley Powell Gardner.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, A precious cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. The one who believes in it will not be disturbed” (Isaiah 28:16).

Funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Stephen Kinnaird, and an interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery with arrangements are under the direction of Laird Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Roy Dean Alston and Danny’s 5 grandsons: Jonathan Powell, Joel Powell, Josiah Powell, Ethan Powell, and Klint Powell.
