Cason Randyl Chittum

Cason Randyl Chittum was born in Nacogdoches, Texas, on August 28, 1992, to Richie and Melanie Chittum. As the third of three boys, Cason came into this world tough as nails, and toughness seemed to come naturally to him. From an early age, he proved he could endure more than most.

Around the age of two, his middle brother accidentally sprayed him in the eyes with pepper spray. His mother and grandmother rushed him to running water to wash out his eyes, and through it all, Cason never cried. At the age of five, he was attacked by a dog, suffering a broken nose and severe facial injuries that required hours in the emergency room and multiple stitches. Even then, he displayed the strength and resilience that would define so much of his life.

Cason loved playing basketball and excelled at Diboll High School. He was naturally gifted with his hands and began working construction as a teenager before becoming a talented mechanic. Whether building, repairing, or figuring out how something worked, there wasn’t much Cason couldn’t do once he put his mind to it. He took pride in honest, hard work and found joy in creating something with his own hands.

Above all, Cason will be remembered for his kind heart, his love for God, his family, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life.

At the age of twelve, Cason was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Although the disease gradually took a tremendous toll on his body, it never took away the goodness that lived in his heart. Before his health began to decline, Cason loved life. He loved being outdoors, spending time at the beach and around the water, and had a special love for animals. He appreciated the simple things in life and treasured every opportunity to enjoy them.

Like all of us, Cason experienced seasons of hardship. He faced challenges that were difficult to overcome, but those who truly knew him never measured him by the hardest chapters of his life. They knew a man with a kind heart, strong values, a generous spirit, and an unwavering love for his family.

Cason’s greatest blessings were his children, Cashlyn, Carter, and Samuel. He loved them deeply and was proud to be their father. He also loved his brothers, Chad and Codee. Although adulthood often kept them busy with their own families and responsibilities, the bond they shared growing up never faded. Family always remained close to Cason’s heart.

In the final months of his life, Cason endured tremendous complications from diabetes, including the loss of his right eye and later the amputation of his left leg. Even through unimaginable pain, he never completely lost his sense of humor, joking with the nurses that he was going to be a “peg-leg pirate” for Halloween.

Less than a month after his surgery, he traveled with his mother and aunts to Branson, where he laughed, enjoyed time with family, and made memories they will cherish forever. A few weeks before his passing, he spent several days with his father and stepmother at one of his favorite places, Galveston Beach. Being by the water brought him peace.

Throughout every trial, his mother, Melanie, remained faithfully by his side. She cared for him with endless patience, unconditional love, and unwavering devotion. Her strength, compassion, and selfless heart were a constant source of comfort to Cason, and their bond was a beautiful reflection of a mother’s unconditional love.

In his later years, Cason grew closer to God and found comfort in his faith. While his family grieves his passing, they find peace in believing he has been welcomed into the loving arms of his Savior, where he has been made whole again—free from pain, free from illness, and at peace. They take comfort in knowing that he is now walking with God, watching over those he loved so dearly, and protecting them until the day they are reunited.

Cason was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Francis Chittum; maternal grandfather, Eldon Benton; paternal grandparents, Dora and Walter “Taxi” Hundley; stepbrother, Seth Eckman; and cousin, Ashton Woods.

He leaves behind his beloved children, Cashlyn, Carter, and Samuel; his father and stepmother, Richie and Sarah Chittum of La Marque, Texas; his mother, Melanie Rojo of Nacogdoches; his brothers, Chad (Chaney) Chittum of Diboll and Codee Chittum of Nacogdoches; his maternal grandmother, Mildred Benton; his aunts, Charlotte Woods and Tracie (Jubal) Cannon, both of Nacogdoches, and Jane Chamberlin of Friendswood; his uncle, Tommy Medlock of Dickinson; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-aunts, and uncles; his dear friend, Lynzza; and the mothers of his children, Michelle and Clara.

Though Cason’s journey was not without hardship, it was never defined by it. He will be remembered as a loving father, devoted son, caring brother, loyal friend, talented craftsman, and a man whose strength, kindness, and love for his family never left him.

His family will remember his smile, his determination, his love of the outdoors, the beach, and animals, and the way he could fix just about anything he put his hands on. While his time with us was far too short, the love he gave, the faith he found, and the memories he leaves behind will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

As Cason’s family and friends say goodbye, they hold tightly to the promise that death is not the end, but a beginning in the presence of God. Though his absence leaves a deep emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, they find comfort knowing that he is no longer suffering, but has been restored, made whole, and is surrounded by the love and peace of his Savior.

Until the day they are reunited, Cason’s memory will live on through the lives he touched, the children he loved, the family he cherished, and the love he gave so freely.

Cason attended church with his mother at Community Apostolic of Nacogdoches, and this is where the visitation and funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Visitation begins at 1:00pm for friends, and the service will begin at 2:00pm. Officiating the service will be Chad Chittum, Pastor Lawrence Powell, and Pastor Brent Crosswhite.

Pallbearers will be Chad Chittum, Codee Chittum, Carter Chittum, Joshua Cannon, Andrew Cannon, Antonio Rojo, Ronnie Benton, and Jimmy Blackshire.
