Mr. Dempsey passed away on November 7, 2023 in Nacogdoches. He was born on March 5, 1961 in Grapevine.
Buford Wayne Dempsey was born on March 5, 1961, in Grapevine, Texas, to Elmer and Laverne Dempsey. He grew up in a tight-knit and loving family alongside his seven siblings.
Buford had the unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and included – no matter if they were lifelong friends or someone he just met. His contagious smile and exclamation of “How you been doin’?” welcomed new friends and old. He truly enjoyed learning the stories of everyone he encountered, especially those who stopped by to browse his resale shop.
He loved to help people, and he loved his family deeply – especially his children and grandchildren. This love for family and community was always on display during the cookouts and fish fries he was famous for. No one left Buford’s cookouts hungry, and more often than not, you left with a heaping plate of food to take home.
Buford loved animals, and if you spent any time with him, you also knew his four-legged sidekicks. His dogs Buckshot, Deuce and Reece could always be found riding next to him.
Also by his side since childhood was his best friend, Kent Knight. Although not related by blood, their decades-long friendship was a true brotherhood.
The Pineywoods of East Texas were Buford’s home – from his years spent working in the logging woods, to his favorite pastimes of hunting, fishing and gardening, Buford found peace among the pines.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kayle Dempsey of Nacogdoches, Texas; son, Christopher Dempsey and wife Sarah of Nacogdoches; step-daughters, Amber Garber and husband T.J. of Nacogdoches, and Kaci Hogue and husband Randy of Douglass, Texas; eight grandchildren: Christopher Dempsey, Jr., Cadyn Hogue, Chance Garber, Cannon Ramsey, Hayley Hogue, Colt Garber, Kiptyn Garber, and Kymber Hogue; and siblings Billy Dempsey and wife Theresa of Nacogdoches; James Dempsey and wife Paula of Cushing, Texas; Bobby Dempsey of Cushing; Brenda Knight and husband David of Cushing; Betty Hitchcox and husband Gary of Chico, Texas; and Barbara Lawrence and husband Pat of Oak Point, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Melba Smith.
