Betty Ann (Nash) Dempsey

Betty Ann (Nash) Dempsey, 86, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on March 31, 1940, in Houston, Texas, and lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, unwavering faith, and a deep love for her family.

Betty shared 51 wonderful years of marriage with the love of her life, Jack Allen Dempsey, until his passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Allen Dempsey; her beloved son, Roy Dempsey; her parents, Bertha Dorothy Pettit and Shuler William Nash; and her sister, Shirley Carolyn Shaw of San Antonio, Texas.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Bo Dempsey and wife Kelley of Katy, Texas; Wesley Nichols and Leslie Anne Smith of Nacogdoches, Texas; Mark Dempsey and wife Anna of Dilley, Texas; Kelly Dempsey of Nacogdoches, Texas; Shelly Rios of Nacogdoches, Texas; Dana Cardwell and husband Richard of Rosenberg, Texas; and Cherry Baker and husband Dr. Richard Baker of Nacogdoches, Texas.

She also leaves behind ten cherished grandchildren and seven treasured great-grandchildren. Sisters, Martha Sue Shaver of Burton, Texas; and Patricia (Patty) Jean Sanders of Rosenberg, Texas. Brother, William (Bill) Forrest Forbes and wife Debbie of Cypress, Texas, along with extended family members, and countless dear friends.

Betty had a heart for serving others and spent her life quietly making a difference wherever she went. During her years working at Richmond State School, she lovingly opened her home each Christmas to children who had no families with whom to celebrate, ensuring they experienced the joy and warmth of the season. Her compassion for those less fortunate was one of her defining qualities, and she instilled those same values of generosity and kindness in her own children.

Christmas was Betty’s favorite time of year. She treasured the true meaning of the season, delighted in the beauty and fragrance of a real Christmas tree, and found immense joy in creating lasting memories with those she loved. In her younger years, she loved taking her children to the beach, where many treasured family memories were made. She was also a devoted fan of the Houston Oilers and Houston Astros, cheering faithfully through every season with her beloved son-in-law, Demetrio.

Betty’s vibrant personality reflected her colorful spirit. She was a joy to be around and never missed a chance to watch a good scary movie with her family. She welcomed everyone with warmth, loved bright colors, sparkle, and never left home without her signature red lipstick. She had an extraordinary memory, rarely forgetting a face or a name, a gift that endeared her to so many throughout her life.

For 25 years, Betty dedicated herself to caring for others through her work at Nacogdoches Eye Associates. Thousands of patients were greeted by her kindness, compassion, and familiar smile. To so many in the community, she was simply known and loved as “Betty from Dr. Lanier’s office.” Her genuine care for every person she encountered left a lasting impression that extended far beyond her workplace.

Betty also had a special love for animals, especially her faithful dog companion, Charlie, who was always by her side. She often said, “Dogs have feelings just like humans do and should be treated as such,” a reflection of the tenderness she showed to every living creature.

Above all, Betty was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ. Her faith sustained her throughout her life and gave her peace as she prepared to return to her heavenly home. One of her favorite verses was, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10), a promise that brought her great comfort and strength.
